SIX CURTIS FOOTBALL PLAYERS SIGN TO PLAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL

 

Feb. 1, 2017–Six seniors on the 2016 John Curtis football team signed with their colleges of choice on national letter of intent day.

 

Defensive Back Garrett Wallow will play at TCU, offensive lineman Lance Jacob and defensive back Xavier Mitchell will be teammates at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, defensive lineman Poni Tu’uta is headed for Ball State, deep snapper Austin Jacob signed with Cincinnati Christian, and wide receiver Kyle Pierce, Jr., is on his way to Nicholls State.

 

The six helped the Patriots win their first-ever Catholic League Championship in the school’s second year in the highly competitive district.  In their final three years, they played on teams with a combined 28-6 record.

JOHN CURTIS FOOTBALL PLAYERS SIGNING FEB. 1, 2017

 

AUSTIN JACOB, Deep Snapper, 5-10, 170, Cincinnati Christian College

Missed entire 2016 season due to injury.

 

LANCE MAYFIELD, OL, 6-8, 315, University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff

2016:  Paved the way for an offense that racked up 2,427 yards rushing (203 per game) and 3,276 yards of total offense (292 per game).

Followed in the footsteps—literally at the same position—of All-American Willie Allen who anchored the offensive line last year, now playing at LSU.

XAVIER MITCHELL, DB, 6-1, 230, University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff

2016:  25 tackles in 7 games.  Made tackles in 34-31 win over Parkview Baptist.  Missed 5 games midseason due to injury.

 

KYLE PIERCE, JR.,WR, 6-0, 190, Nicholls State University (preferred walk-on)

Key player in an offensive arsenal that rolled up 3,266 total yards in 11 games.

 

PONI TU’UTA, DL, 6-3, 290, Ball State University

2016:  37 tackles, 3 for loss

2015:  17 tackles, 5 for loss

2014:  18 tackles, 4 for loss

Career:   72 tackles, 12 for loss

Honors—

GARRETT WALLOW, DB, 6-2, 210, Texas Christian University

Career Defense:  173 tackles, 1 interception

2016:  67 tackles, 1 int.

Two year All-State selection

2016:  His fourth down breakup inside the Curtis 5-yard line sealed the win over St. Augustine with nine seconds left in the game…His 12-yard interception return set up the second Curtis touchdown vs. St. Aug… He had 11 tackles vs. Jesuit, 9 solo tackles vs. Parkview Baptist….he forced a fumble against Brother Martin.

2015:  His 72 tackles led the team.

2014:  As a sophomore, his fumble recovery set up the Patriots’ winning touchdown and his late interception sealed the 13-7 victory over Evangel in the State quarterfinals.
