BASEBALL, SOFTBALL EYE BIG WEEKENDS

A huge weekend is coming up on the diamond, with the baseball team battling for the Catholic league title while the softball team hosts a tournament over the final weekend of the regular season.

Curtis and Jesuit will hook up on a Saturday-Monday set with the current top rung in the district on the line in baseball.  The softball team will play three games as it reaches the final tune-up stages for the playoffs.  The track team gets a breather over the weekend after competing in the Newman meet Thursday.

BASEBALL

Off to a strong 6-1 start in Catholic League play and winners of 10 of its last 11 games overall, the Patriot baseball team plays the second of its two district contests against  St. Augustine at Larry Gilbert Stadium Thursday at 6:30 pm.   That will be followed by games against Jesuit at Mike Miley Saturday at  2 pm and at John Ryan Stadium next Monday at 7 pm.

The Patriots blanked St. Aug 10-0 Tuesday behind the pitching and hitting of Cade Beloso, who earned the win on the mound and knocked in three turns to boot.  The Patriots gained a split with Shaw Saturday, coming back from a 4-0 loss the previous night to win big, 13-3.  Logan Stevens whacked a grand slam home run in the second game.

SOFTBALL

The softball team will play Thomas Jefferson (Friday, 3:30 pm), Lakeshore (Saturday, 9 am) and Lutcher (Saturday, 11 am) in the John Curtis Tournament this weekend at JPRD Complex.

The Lady Patriots rebounded from a rough weekend to defeat Thomas Jefferson, 7-1, Monday.  Cam Goodman went three-for-three including a triple and three RBIs to spark the win.  Curtis dropped a 5-2 decision to district-leading Mt. Carmel last week, then fell to North Vermillion (11-5) and Calvary Baptist (7-2) in the Parkview Baptist Tournament in Baton Rouge.  A Thursday encounter with Belle Chasse precedes this weekend’s tournament action.

TRACK

The Curtis track team won the junior high division of the Crusader Relays (hosted by Brother Martin) last week with a group that consisted primarily of 8th graders. The meet included all of the Catholic League schools among a total of 15 teams.  Curtis wrapped up the fourth of four weekends of hosting area 8th grade competition at JPRD.

Poni Tu’uta took third place in the Mobile Invitational on Saturday  This week’s activity will be concentrated on the J. Keefe Hecker Newman Invitational Thursday at Tad Gormley, with a field of 12 teams competing.
