Track & Field: John Curtis boys, Lafayette girls take team titles at Strawberry Relays

John Curtis is always a power in track and field, and the 2017 campaign is no exception.

The Curtis boys won the Strawberry Relays at Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond in dominant fashion, easily outdistancing second-place Walker for the crown. Westgate was third with Covington fourth and St. Thomas Aquinas fifth.

Sprinter Cody Branch was a star, winning both the 100 and 200-meter dashes while Zach Barthel won the 3,200 meter run for the Patriots. Curtis swept the relay races, winning the 4×100, the 4×200 and the 4×400 runs.

In the field event portion of the competition, Donell Jones won the high jump, Poni Tu’uta won the shot put competition and Zechariah Blake captured the javelin throw.

Lafayette won the girls competition by a wide margin with Ursuline Academy second, Walker third, John Curtis fourth and St. Thomas Aquinas fifth.

The Lions had six individual winners and they swept the three relay races. Archbishop Chapelle sprinter Destinee Jeanpierre swept the 100 and 200-meter runs while Riley Killian of Chapelle won the 3,200 meter run.

Alysia Terry of Ursuline won the 100-meter hurdles, Jordan Strahan of St. Thomas Aquinas captured the high jump title, Abbi Owens of Curtis won the pole vault, Charity Conlin of Covington won the discus throw and Leigh Maher of Country Day took first in the javelin competition.
