Three John Curtis Athletes were named to the 2015 All-State Track and Field Team: Devyn Keith, Austin Brown, and Devin Savwoir. Keith made the team in two events, the 800 and 3,200 meter runs; Brown also made it in the 800 and Savoir earned the laurels in the shot put.
The boys team finished in a tie for third place in the Class 5A Sugar Bowl LHSAA State Track and Field meet in Baton Rouge. The Curtis girls team scored in three relay events, good for a tie for twentieth place. Those were good showings in the Patriots’ first year competing in the state’s top classification.
Austin Brown won the 800 in the State meet; his time of 1:55.63 was the best of all five classifications. Savwoir finished second in the shot put (53-08.25), followed by teammate Ponti Tu’ua, who was fourth (52-10.50).
Zechariah Blake finished fourth in the javelin (174-04) and Travis O’Connor took fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (14.77).
Brown also anchored the boys 4×400 meter relay team that finished second; Tyrone Leggette, Cody Branch and Richard Miller preceded him and the Curtis foursome turned in a time of 3:20.96. The Patriots’ 4×100 relay team of Branch, Legette, Marquis Albert and Tyrone Chevalier finished fifth (42.21).
The girls 4×100 relay team was second (48.42) with Dar’Jene Brown, Cameron Goodman, Raven Nunnery and Jane Wright carrying the baton. The same four took sixth in the 4×200 relay (1:43.09). Brown, Nunnery, Tyler Jones and Layla Pongracz teamed up for sixth in the 4×400 relay.
