Sports Wrap 3-14-17

Sports Wrap offers a look back at the previous week’s games plus a coming schedule.

The Lady Patriots softball team has a busy week coming up, opening district play and serving as host team for the John Curtis Softball Tournament.

Coach Jerry Godfrey’s Curtis girls have a 7-3 record to date, highlighted by a three-game sweep in the Northshore Tournament .  Curtis defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 8-5, Denham Springs 5-4, and Ponchatoula 5-1.

Four players have batting averages over .400, led by Sophomore Cameron Goodman with a .645 mark.  Alyssa Dean follows with a .520 average, Sierra Sacco (an 8th grader) is hitting .481, and Brianna Neal has a .424 average.  Freshman Remi Hebert has handled all of the mound chores to date, with a 1.88 earned run average.

The Curtis Tournament will be played Friday and Saturday, with St. Thomas More, Haynes, Parkview Baptist, and Cabrini all participating.  A home game against Dominican Tuesday (Mar. 14) opens district play.

The Curtis baseball team won four of five games last week (all in the annual Curtis Tournament), to extend their season record to 11-4.  Pitching and defense came up big for the Patriots; the opponents were held to one run or less in all four Curtis wins.

The victories were by 6-1 over St. Michael, 2-1 over Terrebonne, 3-0 over Belle Chasse and 4-1 over Holy Cross.  Only a 5-3 loss to Belle Chasse spoiled an otherwise perfect week.  Pitcher Ian Landreneau provided the statistical highlight of the week with a complete game shutout of Belle Chasse.

Curtis team will play in the Shaw Tournament this weekend with four games in five days at Mike Miley.  Coach Jeff Curtis’ team will begin defense of their Catholic League Championship March 21.

The varsity track team finished first in the 14-team John Williams Invitational at Pontchatoula High School last Friday.  The girls team came in a respectable fourth.  Next up is the Ronnie Doyle Classic at Tad Gormley, hosted by Rummel High School  on Thursday.

Poni Tu’uta represented John Curtis at the prestigious New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York, competing with the best high school athletes in the country.  His toss of 56-04.75 placed him in the top 20 in the all-star field.  The Patriots’ track program continues to grow under Coach Preston Curtis, with added depth on the varsity and more than 100 students participating in grades 3-8.
