The Patriot boys track team won the district 9-5A championship Thursday afternoon at Tad Gormley Stadium while the girls team finished second.
Coach Preston Curtis’s boys team breezed to a 27-point margin over second place Jesuit. The final team totals were: 1) John Curtis 158, 2) Jesuit 131, 3) Brother Martin 86.5, 4) St. Augustine 82, 5) Archbishop Rummel 42.5, 6)Holy Cross 40, 7) Shaw 21.5.
Senior Poni Tu’uta and freshman Zacariah Blake gave the Patriots 36 points by finishing 1-2 in both the shot put and discus. Donell Jones was the winner of the high jump. In the running events, Curtis won the 4×100 relay when the quartet of Derrick Williams, Cody Branch, Tyrone Leggette, and Garrett Wallow) finished first, then the same four broke the tape in the 4×200 relay.
The girls team finished second in the district competition. Sophomore Ariel Myers and eighth-grader Zoe Curtis finished 1-2 in the shot put and Myers also won the discus. Trionna Gause (800 meter run), Abby Owens (pole vault) and the 4×400 meter relay team (Layla Jackson, Hannah Ivory, Gause, Alli Despaux) all won.
