Track and softball topped the news last week. The John Curtis boys and girls track team had a big day in the regional meet in Thibodaux, while the softball team played in the State tournament in Sulphur, winning a quarterfinal game before bowing out.
A huge weekend is coming up, the baseball team serving as host for the best-of-three quarterfinals against Evangel, while the track team heads for Baton Rouge and the State Class 5A meet. Good luck to all of our Patriot athletes!
The John Curtis boys track team clearly dominated the Region 5-3A meet in Thibodaux. First places were recorded by five Patriot athletes: Poni Tu’uta in the shot put and discus, Cody Branch in the 200, Zecherian Blake in the javelin, Lance Williams in the long jump, and Donell Jones in the high jump.
In the girls competition, Troianna Gause won the 600 meter run, Layla Jackson took the 800 meter run, and Abby Owens won the pole vault.
The State Class 5A Track Meet is Saturday, May 5, at Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge.
The Lady Pirates travelled all the way to Suphur to play local rival Chapelle in the Select Division I State Championship quarterfinals Friday, and Curtis eliminated the Chipmunks by a decisive 7-1 count. Victoria Langford blasted a home run, and Curtis scored in five of the first six innings to put it away. Remi Hebert limited Chapelle to five hits to get the win in the circle.
Curtis moved on to Championship Saturday and local foe Mt. Carmel in the semifinals. The Lady Patriots fought to the finish but came up short, 10-3, to the eventual State Champions (who won the title by a 15-0 score). Curtis pushed across runs in the last three innings, but it was too late. Courtney Vidrine had two hits including a double and two RBI for the Lady Patriots. Coach Jerry Godfrey’s team was the #3 seeded team in the tournament and finished the season with a proud 19-11 record.
The baseball team continued its intrasquad tune-ups for the Select Division I quarterfinals at Mike Miley starting Thursday, a best-of-three series with familiar foe Evangel. All games will be played at Mike Miley.
